On December 29th, the Census Bureau released the first installment of
data from the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Datasets. These
datasets are widely used to develop benchmarks for use in monitoring
equal employment opportunity and affirmative action programs.
Eighteen of the planned 24 tables are available now, and the remaining
6 tables will be released later in 2004. (The tables that are not yet
available--tables 3, 4, 10, 11, 16, and 17--involve recoding detailed
job and occupational categories into broader groupings.)
AVAILABLE DATA ITEMS
The EEO tabulations for Michigan include information on occupation (up
to 472 categories) and educational attainment (up to 6 categories) by
sex (2 categories), and race (12 categories). Some tabulations also
include age (4 younger age groups or 4 older age groups), industry (88
categories), or earnings (8 categories).
Tables 1 through 7 are based on location of residence, tables 8 through
19 describe selected commuting flows among counties or places, and
tables 20 through 24 are based on location of employment.
AVAILABLE GEOGRAPHY
Data are available for the U.S, individual states, metropolitan areas,
counties, and cities with 50,000 or more people. For some of the more
detailed tables, counties with fewer than 50,000 people are grouped
together. Tabulations of commuting flows only include selected cities
or counties with 50,000 or more people, and tabulations by place of
employment only include cities and counties with 100,000 or more
people.
OBTAINING THE DATA
There are at least three ways to obtain the data:
(1) Much of the data can be viewed or downloaded from the Census
Bureau's website at:
http://www.census.gov/eeo2000/
(2) If you need more detailed information, you can view documentation
and create extracts in various formats for any state or local areas from
the website of the Missouri State Data Center.
An e-mail with more detail about the data available from the Missouri
SDC is attached.
(3) A CD-ROM containing data and technical documentation (but not
software) is being sold by the Census Bureau.
CD's are available in either ASCII or SAS format, and the charge for
the 18 tables available now is $200. (A CD containing all 24 tables
will be available later in 2004 for the same price. Both CD's can be
ordered for $235.)
These CD's can be ordered from the Census Bureau's Customer Services
Center -- telephone number (301) 763-INFO.
