[Maa-l] Board Meeting Today

The MAA board met today.  I thought some of you might like a brief
summary.

First, I'll list the current board members.

It was a great meeting, and there was a lot of energy in the room.  I
wish that the whole membership could have seen it.  

At past board gatherings, annual meeting discussions often dominated
the proceedings.  We've been consciously working to avoid that, and I
think that we've been very successful.  

Instead, we did a lot of brainstorming.  We talked about ways to
improve the web site, the newsletter and the listserv.  We mentioned
possible collaboration opportunities.  We asked how to involve students
in MAA.  Much is in the discussion stages, of course, but I'd like
everyone to know that the Board is working to make MAA as effective as
it can be.  

As I'm Open Entry editor, I'll speak briefly on that as an example. 
Whitney Miller wrote a piece for OE on how MAA works (sort of an "MAA
101").  She'll be writing more such articles, and we hope to show
membership what we do, how they can become involved, etc.  Melinda
McMartin contributed an article on the MAA web site, which will also
help toward that end.  I'm seeking suggestions from membership on
further means of improving the newsletter.  Honestly, I'm anxious for
all of you to see the next issue.

In today's Board meeting, we also discussed news items that could
perhaps be included on the listserv and the web site, as well as on Open
Entry.  We're hoping to connect more with the membership and keep it
informed!
