Are there any archivists who have experiences to share? Here is a description of the session: Possible courses of action an institution can take in deaccessioning either entire collections, or portions of collections (based on donor wishes, not relating to institutional collecting mission). How to avoid these dilemmas by thoroughly appraising collections, having complete collection development policies, etc. Talk about done deals, not collections that are a problem currently. One speaker could cover the legal documentation that should go into donor agreements. You will have twenty minutes plus a question or two at the end. I thought some of you might like a brief summary. First, I'll list the current board members. Officers Karen Jania, Bentley Library - President Brecque Keith, Reuther Library - Vice President Whitney Miller, MSU Archives and Historical Collections - Secretary Bill LeFevre, Reuther Library - Treasurer Other Board Members Matthew Daley, Grand Valley State University History Department Bob Garrett, Archives of Michigan Melinda McMartin, Ferris State University Archives Jamie Myler, Ford Motor Company Archives Amy Reimann, Starr Commonwealth Jennifer Thomas, Albion College It was a great meeting, and there was a lot of energy in the room. I wish that the whole membership could have seen it. At past board gatherings, annual meeting discussions often dominated the proceedings. We've been consciously working to avoid that, and I think that we've been very successful. Instead, we did a lot of brainstorming. We talked about ways to improve the web site, the newsletter and the listserv. We mentioned possible collaboration opportunities. We asked how to involve students in MAA. Much is in the discussion stages, of course, but I'd like everyone to know that the Board is working to make MAA as effective as it can be. As I'm Open Entry editor, I'll speak briefly on that as an example. Whitney Miller wrote a piece for OE on how MAA works (sort of an "MAA 101"). She'll be writing more such articles, and we hope to show membership what we do, how they can become involved, etc. Melinda McMartin contributed an article on the MAA web site, which will also help toward that end. I'm seeking suggestions from membership on further means of improving the newsletter. Honestly, I'm anxious for all of you to see the next issue. In today's Board meeting, we also discussed news items that could perhaps be included on the listserv and the web site, as well as on Open Entry. We're hoping to connect more with the membership and keep it informed! The program looks really good. I'm not on the Program Committee, but as a board member, I've seen a draft. I'll just note a few brief highlights. There'll be a copyright workshop on Wed., June 20th. Presenters are Lance Werner, Library Law Specialist, and Nicholas Bozen, Attorney for the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. Plenary speaker is Dr. Anna-Lisa Cox. Dr. Cox will be discussing the history of Covert, Michigan. Covert has been a peaceful biracial community since the Civil War. I have read her book, A STRONGER KINSHIP, and it's a very inspiring story. Individual session topics include Michigan pop culture, conservation, digital records, Presidential libraries, constructing "the perfect web site" and new methods in processing. Local arrangements also has some great tours set up. Locations include the Jiffy Mix Plant, the Forest Hill Cemetary and the Clements, Bentley and Gerald R. Ford Libraries. As I said, I'm not on the Program Committee. I want to give credit, but I also don't want to neglect anyone's name. I do know that Jenny Thomas, Brecque Keith, Sue Panak and Sandy Eklund were all involved in planning. If I forgot anyone, then someone please correct me. Local Arrangements was repesented at today's Board meeting by Board member Jamie Myler. I'd like to mention other participants, but I'm afraid that I don't have their names handy. If anyone would like to credit these individuals, then please do. Oh, a big announcement: Next year's annual meeting will be held in St. Ignace! Mark your calendars for June, 2008.
