That may seem like a little while yet, but it can come fast, and I'd like people to start thinking about it. (I have, in fact, accepted some submissions already.) I'd like some submissions, of course, but I'd also like to know what people would like to see in the newsletter. In the last issue, for example, I conducted an interview. Did everyone enjoy that format? If so, then who do you feel is worthy of an interview THIS time? I'm also thinking of articles or even temporary columns or editorials. Do you know someone who is especially knowledgeable on an archival issue or who is deserving of special spotlight? I'm not afraid to approach such people, but of course, I have to know about them first. If you can think of any candidates, then please send me an e-mail. Any other suggestions are welcome as well. Feel free to e-mail me personally. General comments can also be addressed to the listserv. Thanks. We have fifty-six subscribers now. It would seem a good time to mention a few points: *Please note that this listserv is publicly accessible. It's true that most people won't look at our messages, but all messages ARE available for viewing, nonetheless, and anyone with an internet connection can see them. (I've noted this before, but I think it's worth reiterating.) To access the listserv archives, click here: http://lists.dhal.org/pipermail/maa-l/ *When this list started, all messages had to be pre-approved by the moderator (namely, me). I've since shut that function off, because the State has improved our spam-blocking capability (Spam was the reason for the pre-approval.). Everything you send to the listserv, then, will be directly posted. That said: There does sometimes seem to be an hour or two delay between a message being sent and a message appearing on the listserv. This may have something to do with the spam-blocking software, but in any case, I'm not doing this. Whatever you send to the listserv will automatically be posted there - with or without delay. *Be sure to let other MAA members know about our listserv. Anyone can sign up by either e-mailing me directly or by subscribing via the listserv main information page. It's on page 12! RE: Oral history programming. I know that some institutions have placed oral histories on their web sites. MSU's Vincent Voice Library comes to mind (You can find them here: http://vvl.lib.msu.edu/index.cfm ). This is an example of making oral histories available through Content DM: http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=%2Fohi . Of course, I don't know if any of web access is what you have in mind. I have been in museums that have used oral histories - or some version of them - in exhibits. A few months ago, I was in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. There were no histories there, but...I do recall an exhibit where actors portrayed real Grand Rapids citizens and you could push a button to hear what they said. Obviously, it's not the same thing, but that basic model could probably be used with real oral histories. One MOHA member is a secondary ed. teacher who incorporates oral histories in his classrooms. I'll privately send you his contact info. I hope that this is of some help. If I think of other examples, I'll let you know. As an aside, my father is quoted in the special issue of Michigan History Magazine about his work as a boy scout selling sandwiches to the hunters awaiting car ferries. But I do have a query I'm hoping some folks can help with. One of our local nonprofit heritage organizations is applying for a planning grant to develop exhibits/programming around existing oral history recordings. They are looking for a consultant/scholar/expert who might have some experience taking oral history recordings and developing public programming using them. This group has a physical facility for exhibits and/or public events, but are unsure of how they might build a program around existing recorded resources. I need to stress that are not looking for help in establishing an oral history program -- there are already quite a few collected and there are good local experts to assist with this ongoing activity. They need someone who has used oral history audio and visual recordings in public programming. At this point, the idea would be to write a planning grant to have this person visit, meet with the planning committee and brainstorm ideas for this kind of future programming. Out of the planning grant activities, they would hope to seek a larger grant to implement the project over a series of years. If you know of someone who might have the experience to provide such advice, drop me a line. Or if you yourself might have the right experiences, let me know.
